The American Cancer Society's Relay For Life® is a 24-hour team event (don't worry, you don't need to commit to the entire 24 hours). Team members from various organizations take turns walking around the track during the event with different activities scheduled. The more team members we have, the fewer the laps each one of us walks!

Visit these websites to check it out the event:
Debra's website explaining why she organized the team

and the Livonia Relay For Life Website for further details.

Signing up as a team member is free of charge. Any amount of money you can donate or raise is appreciated, but those raising $100 or more will get a free t-shirt. If you'd like to get involved, there are several ways to do it:

  • Become a 'full participation' member of the team for the 24-hour period (doesn't mean you have to walk the whole time--just take your turn, but you're there for the entire event) We hope you do this!
    Join Our Team
  • Become a 'limited participation' member of the team by signing up to walk for an hour or two one of two ways (we'd love to have lots of you do this):
    > Solicit donations from friends and families, or
    > Make a one time contribution to the American Cancer Society yourself
    Join Our Team
  • If you're unavailable for the event, but would like to make a donation to help our team meet its goal of $3,000

This year's theme is the Olympics and because the MichiganMoves.com colors are red and blue, we've chosen Australia. Additionally, prizes are given to decorated campsites so we'll try to go all out!

The morning starts with an opening lap and Parade of Teams. Then at least one team member is on the track throughout the event. Around noon, they will have a Survivor's lap with a ceremony and luncheon for all cancer survivors.

At dusk, luminarias are lit and they line the track in memory of or in honor of those impacted by cancer. Anyone contributing $10 to our team is able to designate a luminaria for their loved one. At that time, everyone makes a silent lap around the track, and it's quite a moving ceremony.

Laps continue through the night, then closing ceremonies are at 9 AM Sunday morning. Everyone I've talked to says it's a wonderful experience and they couldn't wait to participate again.

Although this is our first year doing the event, we're going to have a lot of fun and commraderie with a great team while we raise money for a cause that impacts so many people's lives.  Please join us!
